Recently I had the opportunity to go to Colorado and meet up with good friend and 2-time World Series Champion (baseball) Ryan Kalish as he recovers from his 14th surgery. At 29 years old and with his past injuries being a burden on his playing career, it was refreshing to sit down and have a discussion about how health, wellness and nutrition have played a great part in his recovery but the most important tool he has gained through it all? Perspective. 'I began to focus more on what I DID have rather than the things that I DIDN'T.' That right there says it all. A hot up and coming prospect drafted by the Boston Red Sox right out of high school, Kalish was regarded by many to be the next big thing in Boston. Up in the Major Leagues by the age of 22 and loving life, it was easy for him to believe that he had made it, which he had. He was doing very well until the injuries hit, again and again. The thoughts began to haunt him as he looked over his past career at what 'could have been.' But then, in late 2016 something hit him... perspective. Kalish became very involved into meditation and finding out more about himself as he recovered from his injury for the 14th time, in beautiful Vail, Colorado. 'I've reached the pinnacle in baseball, made the Major Leagues, made incredible friends and traveled all over the world. When you think about it, it could be SO, so much worse. There are so many people out there with real problems and issues to deal with. Realizing and counting my blessings became part of my daily mantra.' As he sits in his apartment in Scottsdale, Arizona, now a player AND coach for the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs, he can't help but get excited at the possibilities for his future. 'I'm in the best shape of my life, both physically and mentally, and I get a chance to work out and recover in some of the best facilities possible, what do I have to complain about? I get to help young minor leaguers who are coming up and looking for guidance. I am still living my dream, and I truly feel that this is only the beginning and my past has made me who I am today. I am excited to see what the future holds in store. Bottom line, I am super grateful to be helping others and doing what I love.' Ryan is a special person, one that is going to help many with his passion, sincerity and authenticity. It is an honor to call him a friend, check out the video below to hear more from Ryan.
