Vitamin-A Skincare That Won’t Give You “The Retinol Uglies”

Retinol can work… for the people who can stick with it. Most can't. Organic Alfalfa delivers plant-based Vitamin A in a form gentle enough to use day after day, so you can stay consistent without the redness, peeling, and "purge" that make people quit retinol.
Since the 80s, retinol has had a tight grip on the skincare industry. As a prescription (tretinoin) and in over-the-counter formulas, it's earned its reputation for results… and an equally well-earned reputation for harsh side effects. The "retinol uglies," dryness, flaking, redness, itching, and heightened sun sensitivity while the skin barrier rebuilds are all well-documented effects of topical retinoids.¹
A lot of people simply give up before they ever see results. The irritation is real, and so is the dropout. No matter what the end result might be, the question is, "Can you tolerate it long enough to benefit?"
That's where a gentler path to Vitamin A shines. In our nutrient-rich Gold Serum, Organic Alfalfa—harvested from France—plays a marquee role in an award-winning formula built around a simple idea:
The version of Vitamin A you'll keep using beats the strongest one you abandon.
If you've been "burned" by retinol in the past, are looking for a more sustainable path to healthy-looking skin, and care about thoughtfully sourced natural ingredients, read on.
A Hardy, Nutrient-Dense Botanical
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a humble-looking 3-foot shrub with a secret below the surface: a taproot that can reach as far as 20 feet (and, in ideal conditions, considerably deeper).² That root system is what makes Alfalfa famously resilient, drought-tolerant, and able to thrive where other crops struggle, which is part of why it's been prized as a nourishing plant for thousands of years.
Above ground, in its leaves, alfalfa produces a rich profile of plant compounds, including beta-carotene, the plant-based precursor to Vitamin A, alongside Vitamins C, E, and K and a broad spectrum of minerals.³ It's this leafy, whole-plant nutrition that earns alfalfa its "green superfood" status.
How Beta-Carotene Becomes Vitamin A in the Skin
When beta-carotene is applied to the skin, the skin can convert it toward Vitamin A. In one study on human and mouse skin, topical beta-carotene penetrated the epidermis and increased epidermal retinyl esters—a storage form of Vitamin A—meaning beta-carotene can act as a precursor of Vitamin A right at the surface.⁴
The key word is gradual. Beta-carotene conversion to Vitamin A is naturally slow and self-regulated, so it doesn't flood the skin the way pre-formed actives can.⁵ That gentleness is the whole point.
The forms of Vitamin A that act fastest and most powerfully (like prescription retinoic acid) are also the ones most likely to irritate. Gentler, plant-based Vitamin A trades some of that intensity for tolerability. We think that's the right trade for most people; a routine you can keep is what actually delivers results over time.⁶
Retinol's Gentler Cousin
Here's what makes beta-carotene-rich alfalfa a compelling, low-irritation addition to your daily skincare routine:
-
A plant source of Vitamin A the skin can draw on gradually, to support its own natural renewal⁴
-
Antioxidant support that helps defend against everyday environmental stress⁷
-
Whole-plant nutrition — Vitamins C, E, and K plus minerals and amino acids that support overall skin health³
-
Gentle enough for daily, long-term use, including for more reactive complexions; consistency is realistic rather than aspirational⁶
Unlike prescription retinoids, this is a potent form of Vitamin A you can actually live with, every day, without the angry, irritated skin.
More Than Just Vitamin A
When we source ingredients, dynamism is the first quality we look for. For a formula to be as concentrated, nourishing, and beneficial as possible, every element should earn its place several times over.
That's a big reason Organic Alfalfa captured the imagination of our Founder and Formulator, Andy. This ancient botanical wonder treats your skin to a complete botanical complex—Vitamin A precursors, antioxidant Vitamins, minerals, and amino acids—the way nature tends to package nutrients.³ Think of it as whole-food nutrition for your face & neck.
Andy formulated The Gold Serum to deliver visible results using Organic Botanicals that respect the skin's natural intelligence. Organic Alfalfa-derived Vitamin A earned its place alongside ingredients like Astaxanthin, GHK-Cu (Copper Tripeptide-1), and CoQ-10, each chosen to nourish, support, and help reveal your skin's natural luminosity.
Nutrients, Not Toxins (better for your skin, better over time)
The benefits of Vitamin A build steadily with regular use, and gentler, lower-irritation routines allow you to actually stick with your ritual.⁶ A form your skin tolerates day after day gives it the chance to do what it does best.
Plant-derived Vitamin A may be one of the best-kept secrets in natural skincare—because it's the version you won't quit.
A note on the science
Vitamin A (in its various forms) is one of the most studied ingredient categories in dermatology, which is why it's earned its place in skincare. Where we reference clinical findings about Vitamin A or retinoids below, those studies were conducted on retinoid actives, not on alfalfa specifically — we cite them to explain the ingredient category, not to claim Gold Serum reproduces those exact results. Alfalfa-derived beta-carotene is a gentle, plant-based member of that family, and we describe it as exactly that.
